Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday approved the composition of a Russian delegation for upcoming talks with Ukraine in Istanbul, Türkiye, according to a Kremlin statement.
The talks, set to take place on Thursday, would be the first direct talks between Moscow and Kyiv since March 2022, a month after Russia launched a "special military operation" into Ukraine.
In a statement on Sunday, Putin proposed the resumption of direct negotiations with Ukraine on May 15 in the Turkish city.
Who's who?
The Russian delegation will be led by Russian presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, who was involved in 2022 negotiations, and includes Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin, Igor Kostyukov, chief of the main directorate of the general staff of the Russian army, and Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin, who was also involved in 2022 negotiations, according to the statement.
Apart from the delegation members, four experts were also approved to take part in the talks.
The members of the Ukrainian delegation have not been announced yet, but a Ukrainian official told Reuters that Zelenskyy was on his way to Türkiye. Earlier, the Ukrainian leader said he would take part in the negotiations only if Putin also attended.
The U.S. delegation includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio and senior envoys Steve Witkoff and Keith Kellogg.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said early on Thursday that he had met with Rubio to share Zelenskyy's peace vision and "coordinate positions during this critical week."
The U.S. State Department said on Tuesday that the U.S. side believes the current Russia-Ukraine negotiations are a "key opportunity" to achieve peace.

What will they talk about?
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said on Tuesday that the talks in Istanbul will focus on reaching a sustainable peace agreement based on realities on the ground, including territorial issues, TASS reported.
Earlier on Wednesday, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov revealed in an interview broadcast on the Russian television channel Rossiya 1 that the Russian delegation would address political and technical issues at the upcoming talks.
When asked what he thought might come out of the talks, Ryabkov told TASS that "it is too early to make predictions."
Zelenskyy said on Tuesday that he expects a ceasefire to result from a potential in-person meeting with Putin, and the discussions could include an all-for-all prisoner exchange, the Kyiv Independent reported.
Despite the prospect of talks, the two sides' positions on how the fighting should end remain far apart, and there have been few signs either is willing to make concessions.
Sun Zhuangzhi, director of the Institute of Russian, Eastern European and Central Asian Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told China Media Group that it is essential for the two countries to engage directly since U.S. mediation has yet to produce tangible results.
However, the result of direct talks remains questionable, Sun said, adding that "although there have been previous attempts at a ceasefire, none have truly taken hold for one reason or another."
Experts also warned that core demands remain the major divide between the two sides, which would directly determine the format of how the leaders will "make the talk."
Putin on Sunday called for the resumption of direct negotiations with Ukraine without any preconditions, while his Ukrainian counterpart Zelenskyy believes a ceasefire should be agreed upon before the two sides start talking.
Another thing that is troubling the two sides is "the nature" of this negotiation, according to Zhang Xin, associate professor at the School of Politics and International Relations at East China Normal University. "The Ukrainian side has demanded President Putin should be present. This will be direct negotiation between the two top political leaders of the two countries. Ideally [the talk] should also include the presence of the U.S. president," Zhang told CGTN.
Yet on Thursday, Putin confirmed the makeup of the Russian delegation, which includes his aides and deputy ministers, but not himself.
"These are two technical issues that are particularly troubling them right now," Zhang said.
