The Politics of Symbolism in Post-Soviet Russia.
The collapse of the USSR and its metanarrative left a large intellectual gap in the contemporary Soviet polity. A new narrative was needed to anchor the new polity and provide a sense of legitimacy to the new regime. The development of such a narrative was impossible under President Yeltsin because of the levels of political conflict that were evident at that time. After Yeltsin left the scene, this political problem disappeared, but the essential problem remained: how to integrate the Soviet experience into a coherent national narrative. The essence of this problem was the contested nature of the USSR in the contemporary public sphere. This was a function of the differentiated nature of memory and the consequent diversity of attitudes to the USSR. Positive memory acted as a basis for the nostalgia currently widely evident in Russian society. But there is also a more negative view of the Soviet experience, and this rests in part upon images of Stalin and the terror/repressions. There has been no full coming to terms with the Stalin question, and this, and the development of a coherent symbolic narrative, may have to await the passing of the current generation.
