This talk reconstructs the critical Marxist debates about the class nature of the Soviet Union since 1917. I will argue that in the 1930s three approaches developed that dominated further discussions for several decades: 1) capitalism; 2) new type of class society (bureaucratic collectivism); and 3) degenerated workers’ state. All three approaches have important weaknesses. In the 1960s a forth current developed that did not use fixed labels. I will conclude with a the presentation of a provisional theory.
