China-Russia Joint Institute, East China Normal University
2nd Annual Workshop for Young Academic Elites
November 10-16, 2015, Shanghai
With strong support from the Ministry of Education, under the framework of the China-Russia Joint Institute, the School of Advanced International and Area Studies at East China Normal University will hold second annual international workshop for young academic elites in November 2015 in Shanghai.
Workshop Theme
“Eurasia in the Future World System”
Workshop Objectives
The terms “Eurasianism” and “Eurasia” have once again come to the fore on the post-Soviet political and intellectual scene since 1991. It has also gained increasing attention in the Asia Pacific region. However, these concepts and practice have always beset with numerous ambiguities, paradoxes and contradictions. As a consequence, the specific policy implication of these concepts is also widely disputed within and outside of the region. Major countries in the broadly defined Eurasian region all have different visions about future economic and political regional integration.
Building on the successful first international workshop, which focused on the varieties of historical and conceptual meanings of Eurasian space and Eurasianism, our second annual international workshop will focus on the current day policy challenges and on-going policy practices related to Eurasia. The workshop brings together top scholars and policy experts from China, Russia, Central Asia and several other countries to give master classes. Graduate students from selected higher education institutions in the broadly defined Eurasian region will present their work under the workshop theme with guidance from senior scholars.
Format and Themes
The second annual workshop will be taking place in Shanghai, November 10-16, 2015. The working language of the workshop is English. The workshop will consist of:
- Senior experts’ master lectures
- Group discussion with both senior scholars and students
- Students’ presentation of their own work
- Visits to local institutions (higher education institutions, commercial entities and media)
- Local sight-seeing and other cultural events
Possible themes to be covered by the workshop include:
- Contemporary geopolitical implications of Eurasianism
- Eurasian theories in the context of “Sea power vs. land power” debate
- Multiple interpretations of and engagements with the Eurasian space (Russia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, China, India, Korea, etc.)
- Progress of the “Belt-Road Initiative” and “Eurasian Economic Union”
- Regionalism and regional organizations in Eurasia
- Security challenge and policy responses in Eurasia
- Religion and ethnic dimensions of Eurasia integration
Expenditures
The workshop is open to master and doctoral students from all around the world. Participation is both by invitation and by application. There are no tuition fees for students. The organizers will cover admitted students’ local accommodation and meals during the workshop in Shanghai while students will arrange their own transportation to Shanghai. The organizers will assist the students to apply for Chinese visa if necessary.
Application
The workshop organizing committee will select up to twenty master and doctoral students from multiple disciplines. Applications from both within the broadly defined Eurasia region and outside are welcome. Deadline for applications is September 15, 2015. Please send your letter of motivation of no more than 500 words and your CV (both in English) to the workshop coordinator.
